Glycoproteins

Glycoproteins are large molecules composed of both sugar and protein molecules, which play an important role in many biological processes. They are involved in cell adhesion, cell-to-cell recognition, virus entry into cells, enzyme regulation, cell growth and development and immune responses. Glycoproteins are also essential components of many hormones, such as insulin and TSH, and can act as antibodies. Many diseases, such as diabetes, are associated with defective glycoproteins, and the development of therapeutic strategies for these diseases requires a detailed understanding of glycoproteins. Therefore, glycoproteins play an essential role in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases.

Glycomics is particularly important in microbiology because glycans play diverse roles in bacterial physiology. Metabolomics combines strategies to identify and quantify cellular metabolites using sophisticated analytical technologies with the application of statistical and multi-variant methods for information extraction and data interpretation.
