Secondary Metabolism
Secondary metabolism is the process in which organisms synthesize a variety of different compounds that are not directly involved in their basic metabolic processes, including growth and reproduction. These compounds are known as secondary metabolites and they can take many forms, such as hormones, pigments, and antibiotics. Secondary metabolites often possess beneficial properties and can be used for medicinal, agricultural, and industrial purposes. For example, pharmaceuticals such as penicillin are derived from secondary metabolites and are used to treat infections. Agricultural use of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids can help protect crops from pests and disease. Industries rely on secondary metabolites to create products such as perfumes and food flavoring. By studying secondary metabolites, we can increase our understanding of the many roles these compounds have in an organism’s environment.
