Intestinal Microbiota
The intestinal microbiota is a complex community of microorganisms living in the human digestive tract. It plays an important role in the digestion of food, absorption of nutrients, and protection from disease. It also influences the body’s immune system, helping to regulate inflammation and sensitivity to allergens. As such, an imbalance of the intestinal microbiota can lead to a range of health issues including digestive disturbances, allergies, and poor immunity. Probiotics and prebiotics are the two primary treatments used to support the intestinal microbiota, by introducing or promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria.
