Melioidosis
Melioidosis is a serious tropical disease caused by the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei. People can be infected with the bacterium through direct contact with contaminated soil or water. Symptoms include fever, pneumonia, skin abscesses and internal organ damage. If untreated, melioidosis can be fatal. Treatment involves a combination of antibiotics and supportive care. Melioidosis is an increasingly important health concern in tropical areas, and it is estimated that 89,000 people die from the disease each year. With effective treatment and early diagnosis, however, the vast majority of cases can be cured.
