Epileptic Syndromes
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder which causes seizures in the form of transient disturbances of brain function. It can affect people of all ages and is characterised by sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain, often resulting in a loss of muscle control, loss of consciousness, and changes in behaviour. Epileptic syndromes refer to specific patterns of epileptic activity that can help to diagnose and classify different epilepsies. These syndromes are divided into three major categories: Generalised epilepsies, Partial epilepsies, and Unclassified epilepsies. Each of these categories consists of multiple syndromes with varying characteristics, including the type of seizure, the trigger, and the prognosis. Syndromes can also provide clues to the cause of seizures and help physicians make a diagnosis. Proper diagnosis and treatment are crucial for reducing the frequency and severity of seizures, improving quality of life, and reducing the risk of injury or death.
