Immunology
Immunology is the study of the immune system – a complex biological system that defends the body against foreign agents such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and toxins. It is an important field of medical science as it gives us insight into the body’s natural defense mechanisms and how we can use them to treat, prevent and diagnose diseases. For example, immunology research has led us to understand how vaccines work, how allergies develop, the role of immune cells in cancer, and the development of treatments for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Immunology is also important for understanding the body’s response to transplanted organs and for developing therapies for treatments such as gene therapy and cancer immunotherapy.
