Homocysteine
Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is produced naturally in the human body as a result of the breakdown of the essential amino acid, methionine. Elevated homocysteine levels have been linked to an increased risk of developing several chronic illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, and some forms of dementia. Because of this, it is important for people to monitor their homocysteine levels to ensure that they remain within a healthy range. Several B vitamins, such as folate, B6, and B12, play an important role in the metabolism of homocysteine, making them an effective way to both prevent and treat elevated homocysteine levels. Additionally, lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, physical activity, and quitting smoking can also help to keep homocysteine levels in balance.
