Centrosomes
Centrosomes are small cellular organelles that play a critical role in maintaining the structure and function of the cell. They contain proteins and other components that assemble microtubules and actin filaments, which are important structural components of the cytoskeleton. The cell can use these structures for movement, organization, and scaffolding for other proteins and molecules. In addition, centrosomes are essential for cell division and the formation of a cleavage furrow, a process that separates cells during mitosis. Without centrosomes, cells lack the ability to divide and, as a result, die. Thus, centrosomes play a critical role in cell biology and development.
