Coreceptors

Coreceptors are proteins located on the outside of a cell that have the ability to bind to a ligand or hormone. They are thought to be integral in cell-signalling pathways, typically acting in combination with a G-protein coupled receptor. Coreceptors are involved in the regulation of a variety of important biological processes, including immune responses, inflammation, hormone signalling, neurotransmission and neuronal development. They are also important in the development of various diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases and diabetes. Coreceptors play a significant role in how cells respond to their environment, and their importance in cellular communication and disease pathogenesis is increasingly being recognized.
