Cytoskeleton

The cytoskeleton is an essential part of a living cell, providing structural support and enabling cellular movement. It is composed of three components: microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments. These proteins are arranged into a network that functions to support, organize, and move the cell’s components. The cytoskeleton is also involved in cell division, vesicle transport, and membrane dynamics. In addition, its components are essential for the maintenance and coordination of cell shape and polarity. As such, the cytoskeleton is essential for normal cellular physiology and plays a major role in the development, growth, and survival of organisms.
