Monosomics

Monosomics are organisms, such as plants, that have only one of each of the chromosomes they normally possess. Monosomic plants have been studied since the 1950s, as they can provide insights into the mechanisms of gene expression, including the role of individual genes in the development of a plant or organism. Monosomics are also used in breeding programs to provide greater genetic variability in new varieties of plants. In addition, monosomics can be used to study the effects of gene dosage, or the presence and absence of genes, which can lead to better understanding of the structure and function of genes. Finally, monosomics have been used in studies of plant evolution, to better understand the role of genes in the formation of new species.
