Outer Membrane Proteins

Outer Membrane Proteins (OMPs) are proteins found in the outer membranes of bacteria, specifically in the Gram-negative bacteria. They are important because they act as gateways; they control the entry and exit of molecules, such as nutrients, toxins, and drugs, into and out of the bacterial cell. OMPs are key components of targeted drug delivery and vaccine design. They are also used to detect and diagnose bacterial infections, as well as to identify new infectious agents. Thus, OMPs research is valuable in medical, biotechnology, and environmental applications.
