Plant Biology Plant Cell Biology
Plant cell biology is a branch of biology concerned with the study of the structure, function, and development of plant cells. Plant cell biology is important both for its practical applications, such as for agriculture and biotechnology, and for its role in basic research. Plant cell biology provides insight into the biology of cells from an evolutionary perspective, including the regulation and coordination of cell wall formation, cellular metabolism, and cellular communication. By understanding how plant cells function, researchers can develop strategies to increase crop yields and improve the quality of plants for food production, create biofuels, and possibly even engineer plants with desirable traits. Additionally, the data from plant cell biology research can be used to help inform research in other areas, such as human and animal cell biology, and more deeply understand the role of cells in living organisms.
