Chorioamnionitis
Chorioamnionitis is an infection of the innermost membrane surrounding a fetus and its amniotic fluid in the uterus that can lead to serious complications including preterm labor and birth, fetal brain damage, and even death. It can be caused by a variety of bacterial, fungal and viral sources, including Group B Streptococcus. Diagnostic tests, such as amniocentesis, can help to detect the signs of chorioamnionitis. Treatment for chorioamnionitis may involve antibiotics, delivery or a combination of both. Early detection and management of chorioamnionitis are essential to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes for both mother and fetus.
