Dictyostelium
discoideum Dictyostelium discoideum is a single-celled soil-dwelling organism that has been studied for decades in order to understand the mechanisms of multicellular development. This organism is unique in that it has a life cycle that begins as a mobile amoeboid single cell and culminates in the formation of a complex, multi-cellular organism. Dictyostelium discoideum has proven to be an invaluable tool for scientists, as it has allowed them to better understand the molecular basis of multicellular development, cell migration, cell-cell communication, and other aspects of cell biology. Additionally, due to its simple but powerful genetic system, Dictyostelium discoideum is widely used in drug discovery, medical research, and biotechnological applications.
