Fusobacterium Infections
Fusobacterium infections are caused by a group of bacteria from the genus Fusobacterium, which are mainly found in the mouth and intestines of humans. They are Gram-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that can cause different types of infections, such as throat and wound infections, or abscesses. These bacteria are also associated with periodontal (gum) disease, ulcerative colitis, and colorectal cancer. Treatment for Fusobacterium infections involves the use of antibiotics, such as clindamycin, metronidazole, or cefoxitin, as well as determining which type of infection is present and providing supportive care, if needed. Prevention of these infections is mainly done through proper oral hygiene and timely treatment of oral infections.
