Leptospira
Leptospira is a genus of spirochaete bacteria that is commonly found in the environment, particularly in water and soil. The species of Leptospira are able to cause leptospirosis, a potentially deadly disease in humans and animals. However, Leptospira also has beneficial uses. It is an important model organism in studies of cellular biology, physiology and genetics. In addition, some species of Leptospira are used as probiotics to help animals improve weight gain, digestion and immunity. Finally, Leptospira is being investigated as a potential therapeutic agent in humans, as it is known to stimulate the body’s immune response.
