Leptospira Interrogans
Leptospira interrogans is a type of spirochete bacteria that is commonly found in water and soil. It is the main cause of leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease that is spread by direct contact with the urine of infected animals, including livestock, rodents, and canines. Symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, headache, muscle pain, jaundice, and renal failure. If left untreated, the disease can be fatal. Leptospira interrogans can also cause severe liver and kidney damage and meningitis. Leptospira interrogans is an important bacterium to consider when evaluating the risk of leptospirosis. Identifying the presence of the bacterium in an animal or water source can help to determine if a person is at risk for this infection. Treatment for leptospirosis involves antibiotics and prompt medical care.
