Paracoccidioidomycosis
Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by the organism Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. It is mainly found in tropical areas of the Americas, particularly in Brazil and other South American countries. Symptoms include fever, weight loss, fatigue, coughing, and chest pain. In severe cases, it can cause skin rashes and ulcers, and even death. Diagnosis is usually done through laboratory tests, such as an antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test. Treatment includes antifungal medications, such as amphotericin B and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Early and accurate diagnosis is key for a successful outcome. Paracoccidioidomycosis can be prevented by avoiding contact with soil or other environments that may contain the fungus, wearing protective clothing when working in an affected area, and using insect repellents and mosquito nets.
