Periodontal Diseases
Periodontal diseases are a group of oral health conditions affecting the supporting structures of teeth, which include the gums, ligaments, and bone. Characterized by inflammation and destruction of the tissues and structures, periodontal diseases are among the most common causes of tooth loss among adults. In addition to contributing to tooth loss, periodontal diseases have been linked to an increased risk for several systemic health conditions, including increasing the risk for heart attack, stroke, and diabetes. Treatment for periodontal diseases includes brushing and flossing regularly, visiting the dentist for cleanings and check-ups, and in more severe cases, surgical treatment. Taking steps to prevent and treat periodontal diseases is important for maintaining oral health and overall health.
