Loneliness

Loneliness is a feeling of emotional and social isolation. It is common among people of all ages and can have serious mental and physical health consequences. It has been linked to higher risk of depression, dementia, heart disease, poor sleep, and impaired immunity. It is thought that loneliness can lead to changes in brain development, which may increase the risk of developing mental illness. The World Health Organization states that loneliness is a growing public health challenge and recommends various interventions to reduce loneliness, such as social activities and online technologies such as social media. Improving social connections can protect people from the negative consequences of loneliness.
