Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release
Endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR) is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to reduce or eliminate pressure on the median nerve in cases of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The procedure makes use of an endoscope (a small tube with a camera on the tip) which is inserted through a small incision in the wrist in order to release the transverse carpal ligament and open the carpal tunnel. As compared to the traditional open carpal tunnel release (OTR) surgery, ECTR has several advantages including shorter operative time, reduced postoperative pain and a shorter recovery period. Furthermore, the use of ECTR is associated with less risk of nerve damage, better cosmetic outcome and improved satisfaction. Due to these advantages, ECTR is becoming increasingly popular among hand surgeons and patients with CTS.
