Splenectomy

Splenectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the spleen, a small organ located near your stomach that helps filter blood and fight infection. Removing the spleen can be necessary in cases of trauma or infection, or as part of a treatment for certain types of cancers. As a result of the splenectomy, the patient's immune system is weakened, making them more prone to infection, so they must take antibiotics before and after the procedure. Splenectomy can also improve the symptoms of certain diseases like hemolytic anemia and thalassemia, as well as reduce the risk of suffering a ruptured spleen. It can also be recommended as part of a treatment plan for Hodgkin's lymphoma, as well as other types of cancers.
