Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a condition caused by the compression of the nerves, arteries and veins in the thoracic outlet area between the base of the neck and the armpit. Signs and symptoms of TOS can vary, but commonly include pain, numbness, and weakness in the neck, shoulder and arm. TOS can be caused by a variety of factors such as anatomical deformities, trauma, obesity and activities that require repeated movements of the shoulder and arms. Treatment for TOS includes physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and in some cases surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to reduce pain and reduce the risk of more serious complications.
