About the journal
Journal of Big Data Research
Data at scale is both a subject of research and an instrument of it. The journal publishes fundamental and applied research on the methods, systems, and analysis of that data, and brings the communities that advance it into one venue.
Its readers include computer scientists and statisticians, data engineers, analysts, researchers applying these methods within their fields, and those who govern how data may be used.

Foundational and applied research, held to one standard
The journal treats both as full contributions to the field. Each is read against the evidence its own claims require.
Foundational
Theory, methods and systems
Work that advances how data at scale is represented, processed, analyzed, or governed: theoretical results and algorithms, learning and statistical methods, systems and data management, and the data resources and evaluation protocols the field relies on.

- Mathematical reasoning and computational validation, as the claim requires.
Applied
Empirical, validation and field research
Work that carries data-intensive methods into a field and reports what they yield, in areas including health services, genomics, finance, energy, environment, transport, security, education, and social research. Established methods contribute here when they add knowledge within the field.
- Contributes
- Observational and empirical findings, replication, validation, and synthesis.
- Evidence
- Validation appropriate to the setting; a claim about an effect on patients or on an operation rests on evidence of that effect.
Shared standard
Every manuscript, foundational or applied, is read for the data it operates on and its substantive contribution to big-data research, with evidence proportionate to the claim.

Editorial responsibility
Who maintains the journal's scholarly standards
Scholarly standards are maintained by the editorial board and the editors who handle each manuscript, under policies published in full on the Editorial Policies page.
Editorial board
The editorial board oversees assessment and the selection of reviewers with relevant expertise. Editors recuse themselves from decisions on their own submissions and on manuscripts from close collaborators or their own institution; those manuscripts are handled independently by another editor.

Peer review
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Independence and conflicts
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial roles.
Authors declare relevant financial and non-financial interests; editors and reviewers disclose conflicts and step aside where one exists.

Research on human participants or on data about identifiable people reports its ethical basis. Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.

Integrity, concerns and the record
Suspected misconduct is investigated following COPE guidance. Concerns about a published article or about the conduct of the review may be sent to the editorial office at [email protected].
Corrections and retractions are published as notices that keep the record legible, and an appeal is considered by an editor other than the one responsible for the original decision.
