Journal identifiers and DOI registration
ISSN identifies the journal and a DOI identifies an article, keeping its citation resolvable over time. What each one does is set out here.
DOI registration
Articles are assigned DOIs under the publisher prefix 10.14302 and registered with Crossref, the registration agency for those identifiers. The deposit carries the article’s bibliographic metadata and gives it a persistent link, so a citation continues to resolve and can be matched by services that read Crossref. Each article is handled individually rather than as a batch for the archive.

OpenAlex
The journal holds a source record in OpenAlex, the open scholarly index, under ISSN 2643-6655. The record carries the journal’s title, publisher and open-access status.
Article-level citation metadata
Every article page carries citation metadata in the form discovery services read — title, authors, journal, publication date, volume, issue, pages and DOI — so an article can be identified and cited accurately from the page itself.

As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish.
Eligible NIH-funded manuscripts may be deposited individually in PubMed Central through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).
NIHMS is a funder route that applies to an individual manuscript: it places that one article in PubMed Central, and it operates per manuscript rather than at the level of the journal.
