International Physiology Journal

Peer-reviewed research on physiological function — how it is produced, how it is regulated, and how it changes — at every level of biological organization, from transport across a single membrane to the response of an intact organism.

Reduced Tissue Oxygenation and Altered Valsalva Hemodynamics in Young Adults with Type 1 Diabetes

Maria Bitsch Poulsen, Peter Oketa-Onyut Julu, Memon Schah, Mussadiq Shah, Christina Brock

Volume 2, Issue 3  ·  Pages 27–43  ·   ·  10.14302/issn.2578-8590.ipj-26-6121

A cross-sectional comparison of fifteen young adults with type 1 diabetes and fifteen age-matched controls, assessed with standardized cardiovascular autonomic reflex tests alongside continuous beat-to-beat blood pressure and transcutaneous tissue gas recording. Reflex ratios were preserved in both groups, while baseline tissue oxygenation was lower in the diabetes group and the blood-pressure response to the Valsalva maneuver differed across its phases. The authors read the two observations together as possible early signs of dysautonomia and state that longitudinal validation is required.

Concomitant in Vivo Voltammetric and Electrophysiological Analysis Indicate that Nociceptin/Orphanin FQ Affects Dopamine and then Serotonin Activities in Brain Substancia Nigra.

Francesco Crespi

Volume 2, Issue 3  ·  Pages 1–9  ·   ·  10.14302/issn.2578-8590.ipj-19-2772

Concurrent voltammetric and electrophysiological recording in the substantia nigra, used to follow how nociceptin/orphanin FQ affects dopamine and then serotonin activity. The work is an example of mechanism established at the level of the neural circuit rather than inferred from behavior.

In Brief

Swimming Critical Velocity Physiological Meaning is Affected by Testing Distances

Ricardo J. Fernandes

Volume 2, Issue 2  ·  Pages 1–3  ·   ·  10.14302/issn.2578-8590.ipj-18-2556

Swimming performance rests on energy expenditure, propulsive efficiency and hydrodynamic drag, and the laboratory measures that resolve them are invasive, time-consuming and costly. Critical velocity offers a field alternative derived from swimming performance itself. This contribution examines how the testing distances chosen for that determination change what the resulting velocity means physiologically.

Diurnal Variation in the Core Interthreshold Zone in Women and its Sex Difference

Naoshi Kakitsuba, Igor B. Mekjavic

Volume 1, Issue 1  ·  Pages 26–37  ·   ·  10.14302/issn.2578-8590.ipj-18-2078

A study of the core interthreshold zone in women and how it varies across the day, with the sex difference reported alongside. Thermoregulatory control is measured directly rather than inferred from surface temperature.

Substrate Stiffness Influences the Time Dependence of CTGF Protein Expression in Müller Cells

Joshua T Davis, William J Foster

Volume 1, Issue 1  ·  Pages 1–7  ·   ·  10.14302/issn.2578-8590.ipj-17-1910

An examination of how substrate stiffness influences the time course of CTGF protein expression in Müller cells, linking a mechanical property of the cellular environment to a measurable change in protein expression.

Where to start

Finding work by scale

  1. Membrane and cell

Transport, excitability, signaling and cellular energetics, where the physiological consequence is made explicit.

  2. Tissue and microcirculation

Perfusion, gas exchange and the local conditions under which tissue performs work.

  3. Organ systems

Function within a system, and the reflex, humoral and autonomic loops that couple one system to another.

  4. Integrated organism

Whole-body responses to exercise, environment, development and disease, in human and comparative work, and the methods that measure them.

The Aims and Scope page sets out the remit in full. The published record illustrates it; it does not set its boundary.

Editorial handling

How a manuscript is assessed

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

Editorial decisions are independent of fees, services, membership, and editorial or reviewer roles.
