Membership
An optional arrangement that supports the journal’s open-access publishing.
Membership is a publishing arrangement between an author, a research group or an institution and the publisher.
Current membership categories, terms and fees are held by the publisher’s membership office. Authors and institutions considering membership are invited to request the current terms directly, so that what they receive is the schedule in force on the day they ask.

Editorial process
Editorial independence
Manuscripts from members undergo the same independent editorial assessment and peer-review process as all other submissions.
Peer review
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Editorial decisions
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
Editorial and reviewing roles
An editor’s or reviewer’s own submissions are assessed on the same criteria as any other, and are handled independently.
What it is for
Why the arrangement exists
Open access is paid for on the publishing side rather than the reading side. Membership is one of the ways an institution can plan that cost.
Budget planning
An institution or group publishing regularly can agree terms in advance rather than handling each charge separately.
Administrative simplicity
Billing, documentation and invoicing can be arranged once through a single contact.
Open access support
Contributions go to the same editorial, production, metadata and preservation work that the article processing charge covers.
Current terms
Requesting the membership schedule
The publisher’s membership office holds the current categories, durations and fees. Write to [email protected] with the institution or group, the research area and an indication of publishing volume, and the current schedule will be sent.
The journal’s article processing charge is USD 1,800, set out in full on the Article Processing Charges page. Any arrangement is applied to that charge after acceptance.
