Open Fractures
Open fractures are a type of traumatic injury where the broken bone is visible and exposed to the environment, typically due to a high-energy incident. Open fractures can be accompanied by damage to the surrounding tissue, including soft tissue, vascular, and nerve injuries, which can be complex and difficult to manage. Prompt recognition and management of open fractures is essential to minimize infection; reduce the risk of bleeding, nerve, and vascular injuries; and restore functionality. Treatment for open fractures typically includes administering antibiotics, wound care, and surgically repairing the fracture, as well as physical therapy to restore mobility and strength.
