Vicarious Trauma
Vicarious trauma (also known as secondary or indirect trauma) is an emotional reaction to the stress of witnessing or hearing about the traumatic experiences of another person. It can be experienced by those who directly support or provide care to individuals who have survived traumatic events. Professionals such as psychologists, physicians, social workers, teachers, or any person who works with people who have experienced trauma, may be at risk for vicarious trauma. The emotional, physical and psychological effects can be significant and can include reduced empathy, emotional numbing, negative changes in personal relationships, and increased anxiety and depression. Therefore, it is important to have strategies to identify, manage and mitigate vicarious trauma. Examples of such strategies may include training and support, self-care, communication, and peer support.
