Hypospadias
Hypospadias is an abnormality of the penis that occurs in 1 in 200 boys at birth. It is characterized by the opening of the urethra (the tube through which urine passes) being located on the underside of the penis rather than the tip. The diagnosis of hypospadias requires an examination by a specialist and usually requires surgery to correct the defect. Hypospadias can have psychological implications due to its difference in appearance from a normal penis and can also cause difficulties with passing urine and sexual intercourse. Treatment consists of reconstructive surgery to move the urethral opening to the tip of the penis and is often done at an early age for cosmetic and functional reasons. Correcting hypospadias can improve quality of life for those affected, and it is vital to consult a specialist if the condition is suspected.
