Salivary Glands

Salivary glands are specialized organs that produce and secrete saliva, a clear liquid that is important for digestion and oral hygiene. Saliva contains enzymes and electrolytes that help break down food, and also contains bacteria-fighting compounds that help promote oral health. Without salivary glands, humans would have difficulty swallowing, have an increased risk of mouth and throat infections, and experience dry mouth and bad breath. Salivary glands also help maintain healthy teeth and gums, and protect against diseases such as cavities, periodontitis, and other oral health problems.
