Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder in which multiple cysts form in the kidneys. These cysts cause the kidneys to enlarge, sometimes to the size of a football. This causes them to lose their ability to filter out waste products, leading to kidney failure and the need for dialysis or a transplant. PKD is one of the most common causes of kidney failure, affecting up to 12 million people worldwide. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to slow the progression of the disease, helping to reduce the risk of kidney failure.
