Urology is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the urinary tract and male reproductive organs. Urology is an important field of medicine as the urinary system plays an essential role in maintaining the overall health and wellbeing of individuals. Urologists have the skills and expertise to identify, diagnose, and treat a range of urological conditions, from urinary tract infections to kidney stones, prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction. In addition, urologists have important roles to play in preventive medicine and managing disease, such as with the management of incontinence and the detection and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV and AIDS. Urologists are also uniquely trained to address fertility issues, both in men and women, and to perform female pelvic reconstructive surgery.
