Autolysis

Autolysis is the process by which cells digest themselves. It is a form of cell death where the cells break down their own structures and contents. Autolysis can occur both in the absence and presence of external stimuli, and is a common physiological process that occurs in all organisms, either as a natural process or as a result of an injury or disease. Autolysis has several important functions, such as clearing away damaged or dead cells, as well as aiding in tissue growth and healing. It is also essential for the removal of intracellular components that are no longer needed, such as cellular waste products and proteins. In some cases, autolysis can be used to prepare samples for scientific study.
