Co-crystallization
Co-crystallization is the process of creating a solid structure out of two or more molecules. This solid structure is known as a co-crystal, which is a combination of equal or distinct parts that can influence the properties and functions of the substance. Co-crystallization is used mainly in the pharmaceutical industry, as it is a reliable method to effectively control the properties of a molecular structure. Furthermore, co-crystal complexes can drastically improve the solubility and dissolution of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the human body, making them more efficient. Additionally, co-crystallization can be used to protect the APIs from chemical and environmental degradation and can provide tailored properties such as tailored melting point, tailored size, and tailored stability. These tailored properties can be used to tailor the drug release and absorption within the human body, making it a powerful tool for determining the therapeutic effect of the drug.
