Denitrification
Denitrification is the biological process of reducing nitrate or nitrite (NO3? and NO2? respectively) to gaseous nitrogen compounds such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen gas (N2). This process is important in the nitrogen cycle as it occurs in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions and is part of the global nitrogen cycle. Denitrification is essential for mitigating pollutants from agricultural runoff, wastewater, and atmospheric deposition. In addition, it plays an important role in the climate system as it produces greenhouse gases like N2O. Denitrification is carried out by certain species of bacteria, archaea, and fungi, which use the nitrate or nitrite as an energy source and produce nitrogen gas as a byproduct. It is important to manage denitrification processes in order to reduce the risk of pollution and climate change.
