Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency

Glucose-6-phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PD deficiency) is an inherited genetic disorder that affects red blood cells. It is caused by a deficiency in the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), which is responsible for the production of energy in the body. G6PD deficiency can lead to a number of health problems, including anemia, jaundice, kidney problems, shortness of breath, fatigue and an enlarged spleen. With proper diagnosis and treatment, most people with G6PD deficiency can lead healthy lives. Treatment typically involves avoiding certain drugs, foods and other hazardous substances that may trigger a G6PD deficiency-related event. Additionally, dietary modifications and supplements may also be recommended.
