Peroxisomes

Peroxisomes are microscopic organelles found in nearly all eukaryotic cells. They are essential to various metabolic processes, including the breakdown of fatty acids, amino acids and other molecules that generate energy. Peroxisomes contain enzymes necessary for breaking down these molecules, and they also play a vital role in the protective detoxification of cells from dangerous compounds such as reactive oxygen species. Due to their important functions, peroxisomes are fundamental to the health and proper functioning of cells, and research has shown an association between malfunctioning peroxisomes and certain diseases such as Zellweger Syndrome.
