Phagocytosis
Phagocytosis is a process where cells ingest, or take in, solid particles, such as bacteria and viruses. The cells involved in phagocytosis function as part of the body’s immune system by destroying and eliminating these foreign particles. Phagocytosis is essential for defending the body against infections and other diseases as it helps to keep pathogenic microorganisms from entering tissue. The cell membranes of the phagocytic cells are coated with surface molecules that help them to identify and bind to the particles, after which the particles are engulfed, digested, and destroyed. Phagocytosis is an important part of the body’s defense mechanism and helps keep us healthy.
