Phycology
Phycology is the scientific study of algae, a group of aquatic organisms that plays a major role in the global food web and the Earth’s climate system. Algae provide an important food source for many animals, such as filter feeders, and generate important nutrients for aquatic systems. They are also an important part of the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and other essential elements in the environment. Phycology provides insights into the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape species diversity, trophic interactions, and gene flow in aquatic ecosystems. Further, it is essential for the understanding of the impacts of climate change on vulnerable habitats and can help inform the management of marine ecosystems.
