Background: Severe acute mal nutrition (SAM) among children still remains the major problem in Ethiopia. The shortening of the SAM recovery time by applying appropriate dietary means during treatment and also after recovery, can save huge sums of public health spending. Objectives: Determining the recovery time of SAM affected children and developing complementary food supplement (CFS). Methods: Hospital based retrospective cohort study was carried out on 401 SAM affected children. A structured and pre tested data abstraction form was used for data collection. The data were entered into Epi info and exported to SPSS for analysis. All of the nutritional properties of the developed product in three different ratios of the flours of maize, soybean and powder of moringaolifera leaves were assessed and compared to the control (100% maize). Results: The median recovery time was 16 days. There was a significant increase in protein, mineral and beta carotene content with increasing level of Moringaolifera leaf powder in the CFS. Conclusion: To increase the rate of recovery from sever acute malnutrition and also to prevent relapsing, moringa incorporated cheaper complementary fod supplements could be recommended for SAM affected children.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel tomato-based food supplement on the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Methods: Twenty patients with BPH were enrolled in this observational study. They were assigned to consume daily a sachet of Lycoprozen® (5 grams) dissolved in water for two months. Results: All patients successfully completed the Lycoprozen scheduled regimen and the IPSS (International Prostatic Symptom Score) questionnaire before and after treatment. No side effects due to treatment were noticed. In this preliminary study, we have found that Lycoprozen® significantly reduced the LUTS severity (paired t-test, two-tailed p value < 0.0001). The IPSS mean values before and after the treatment were 16.95+6.0 SD (range 31-6) and 12.2+4.9 SD (range 20-2), respectively. Conclusions: Based on these data, Lycoprozen® may represent a suitable alternative option for the treatment of symptomatic BPH patients which worth of further testing in a phase 2 prospective randomized double blind placebo controlled study. The treatment was without side effects and acceptance among patients was high.

Cyanobacteria are considered as one of the important group of organisms having significant ecological, industrial, and biotechnological importance. Cyanobacteria have gained a lot of atten ion in recent years because of their potential applications in biotechnology. This review presents an overview of uses of cyanobacteria in industry agriculture, environment pharmaceutical and medicinal roles and to provide future prospects of the field of cyanobacteria biotechnology. Nowadays cyanobacteria have gained attention researchers because of their various potential applications such as food and feed pharmaceutical industries in medicine, in bioremediation, soil conditioning, as biopolymers, bio adhesives, bioenergy and biofertilizers. Due to presence of wide spectrum of bioactive compounds cyanobacteria has possesses antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and anticancer activities. Several strains of cyanobacteria are also rich in food supplements. Further nitrogen fixing and soil conditioning capacity of cyanobacteria attracted researchers. Recent studies have also shown that cyanobacteria have capability to degrade environmental pollutants and are also being used as a promising source of alternative energy. Cyanobacteria has also its limitations through bloom production it influnces on the nutrient availability and usage of phytoplankton plants. This review is an effort to forward the valuable information about the qualities of cyanobacteria and their potential role in solving the agricultural and environmental problems for the future welfare of the planet.Thus more efforts should be made in search of more potential strains of cyanobacteria to ensure maximum production of the desired products.
