Traumatic Cataract
Traumatic cataract is a type of cataract which is caused by an eye injury or trauma. The injury may involve a direct hit to the eye or a foreign object penetrating the eye. Traumatic cataracts can develop immediately after the injury or can occur years later, even if the injury seems minor. The cataract, which is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, develops due to damage to the lens fibers or capsule. This results in a gradual decrease in vision and sensitivity to glare. The severity of the cataract depends on the degree and location of the injury. In some cases, surgery may be required to remove the cataract and restore vision. Prevention is key to avoiding traumatic cataracts. Wear protective eye gear when participating in sports, working with power tools or machinery, or any other activity that poses a risk of injury to the eyes. Children should also be monitored while playing to avoid injury. If you have experienced an eye injury or notice a change in your vision, seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further damage and minimize the risk of developing a traumatic cataract.
