Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is a medical condition in which the bones of the middle ear become abnormally hard and fused together, impairing the ability of the middle ear to effectively transmit sound from the outer ear to the inner ear. This hearing loss is insidious and gradual, and can eventually lead to complete hearing loss. Fortunately, otosclerosis is treatable and can be cured with a stapedectomy surgery, which involves replacing the ear bones to restore hearing. Otosclerosis is a significant cause of hearing loss and is estimated to affect 0.3-3% of the population, making it the most common cause of conductive hearing loss. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for successful outcomes.
