Semicircular Canals

The semicircular canals are a system of three fluid-filled tubes located in the inner ear, essential for balance and spatial orientation. The semicircular canals detect angular head movement in three planes: anterior-posterior, lateral and superior-inferior. They are connected to the vestibule, which contains the otolith organs, and together form the vestibular system that helps maintain balance and spatial orientation. Any dysfunction of the semicircular canals, due to infection or injury, may cause balance issues and dizziness. There are various tests used to diagnose such disorders and treatments can be used to restore functioning.
