Sinus Headache
Sinus headaches are a type of headache that originate in the sinuses, a system of hollow cavities in the face and skull. They are caused by inflammation of the sinus lining, due to allergies, an infection or environmental irritants. Symptoms can include facial pain and pressure around the eyes, nose and cheeks, a feeling of congestion, a reduced sense of taste and smell and thick, discoloured nasal discharge. Treatment for sinus headaches depends on the underlying cause, such as over-the-counter antinflammatory medications for allergic flares, antibiotics for bacterial sinus infections and topical decongestants to reduce swelling in the sinuses. Sinus headaches should be treated promptly to reduce the risk of worsening the symptoms. If sinus headache symptoms last more than a few days, it is important to see a doctor to rule out other medical conditions, such as migraines and cluster headaches.
