Taste Buds

Taste buds are small sensory structures located on the tongue and inside the mouth that allow us to detect the basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. They are composed of cells that respond to chemicals in food and send messages to the brain. Taste buds enable us to differentiate between foods and ensure our preferences for certain flavors. Additionally, taste buds help us assess theNutritional quality of food; understanding which foods are safe to eat. Without them, our ability to recognize and enjoy food would be severely diminished.
