Oxygen Metabolism
Oxygen metabolism is the process by which living organisms use oxygen to produce energy. Oxygen metabolism is a key process for sustaining life for aerobic organisms and is essential for most metabolic activities, including respiration and digestion. Oxygen plays a critical role as a reactant in the body’s energy-releasing pathways, and a range of oxygen-consuming metabolic activities in the body absorb and use it. Oxygen metabolism is a vital part of the process of cellular respiration, which supplies energy to the cells of the body and is the basis of human life. Oxygen metabolism is also important in the regulation of other biochemical processes, such as protein synthesis and lipid metabolism, as well as in detoxification processes.
