Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a type of endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat problems of the bile ducts and pancreas. It involves the insertion of an endoscope—a thin, flexible tube with a tiny video camera on the end—through the mouth and stomach into the small intestine, and then into the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. This enables the physician to assess these ducts for any abnormalities and to treat the patient by releasing substances and performing other procedures, such as retrieving stones and stents. ERCP can be used to diagnose and treat many conditions, including pancreatitis, blockages of the bile ducts, and bile duct or pancreatic cancer.
