Neonatology

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that focuses on the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn. It is a highly specialized field and the care provided focuses on the infant's unique needs. Neonatologists aim to prevent, assess, diagnose and treat a range of conditions that may impair the baby’s health, including breathing difficulties, infection, birth defects, genetic disorders and problems with digestion. They use a variety of diagnostic tests and treatments, such as x-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests, medications and surgeries to ensure the best possible outcome for the newborn and the family. Neonatologists also offer counseling and education to parents and families, helping them to better understand and care for their newborns.
